Castaic Action Sports Motocross Park Update

--Letter from Neil Nadler, Developer of Proposed Park--
Dear Castaic Town Council and Supporters of Castaic Action Sports Canyon and Business Park,

I sincerely appreciate your efforts regarding the Castaic Action Sports Canyon and Business Park project. I am deeply sorry to report that I am unable to proceed with the approvals on the Castaic Action Sports Canyon. As you know, I have spent over 18 months of my time and over $150,000 of my own money in pursuit of this project. I have paid for many engineering studies, sound studies, traffic studies, architects plans and six project revisions.

Isn’t She Lovely

Article by Rodney Rutherford | Photos by Kelly Sik
Katie McGuireThe bitter wind blew through the wide infield of Los Angeles County Raceway (LACR), 2004 Day in the Dirt Grand Prix was in full swing with motorcycles jumping, digging, and throwing the LACR dirt into the faces of spectators.  I circled around viewing the racing action in a stationary position engaged in a conversation with a colleague, a quiet young girl waited politely.  Her charming personality and quiet demeanor cloaked the warrior within, meet the newest shining star of Southern California Women’s moto-cross, Katie McGuire.  This pretty and comical young lady when asked what motivates her, responded, “food”, then after further thought she responded,  “cream of wheat!”

2006 Hitachi AMA/WMA National Motocross Championship

Article and photos by Rodney Rutherford
Elizabeth BashWomen’s racing has come a long ways since the first Women holder of an AMA Pro license Kerry Klied, had her license confiscated by the AMA in 1971.  The rules at the time did not allow Women to hold a Pro card.  She successfully sued in New York Federal courts and was given back her card.  Dorene Payne knocked the barrier down to the men’s AMA Pro National main, making the cut at a Colorado track, Castle Rock MX in 1983.  The Women marched on, and now we have the 2006 Hitachi AMA/WMA National Motocross Championship presented by Kawasaki.

Recharged and Ready to Go by Rodney Rutherford
Ryan BeatI got the beat, you got the beat, and he’s got the Beat, as in Ryan Beat.  It is almost the mythical bird Phoenix, like how Ryan takes off huge swaths of time and comes back like he never left with the competitive spirit and speed to race as fast or faster after his layoffs.  This statement was confirmed after Ryan took over two years off, raced one Intermediate race at Barona Oaks, jumped to local Pro races and gave some of the local hot shots fits on his first gate and shows no sign of letting off.

Alert Citizen Helps Recover Stolen Race Bike
Menifee Resident Mike Drown said he knew something was out of place when he saw  28 year old Jeremy Phillips of Hemet riding a 2005 Honda CFR450. Drown told police detectives, “the guy was riding it, like he just stole it.” Drown said he first noticed the motorcycle speeding down a rural road near Menifee Lakes Golf Course. Drown said the rider was not wearing motocross riding gear and his helmet was missing the visor (No, it wasn’t Mike Metzger). Drown immediately called a friend who is a Detective for the Murrieta Police Department to report what he was watching as he attempted to follow the reckless rider. Drown followed Phillips and at one point, stalled Phillips by briefly speaking to him. Drown said Phillips went down on the Honda in a dirt field, subsequently stalling the motorcycle.

Anthony Charette by Rod Rutherford
achar1Anthony Charette is the son of former CMC Pro and longtime San Diego motocrosser, David Charette.  David Charette spent his childhood on the Southern Californian symbols of moto legend such as, Carlsbad Raceway, Saddleback, Escape Country and the original Four Corners track.  Four Corners was on the Barona Mesa, just a few miles from it’s predecessor Barona Oaks, which now sits on the Barona Indian Reservation near Ramona, California.  David Charette rode the popular bikes of the time, starting on a Hodaka Super Wombat, moving on to a Penton 125, and after taking a break from racing, came back on a Maico 400 to win a CMC Golden State Title in the early eighties.  To say that Anthony Charette had a motocross influence, is a mild understatement at best, as he was raised around roost.
